Lupins are a critical component of a uniquely Western Australian farming system, the wheat:lupin rotation. Narrow-leafed lupin, the species on which this rotation is based, was domesticated less than 50 years ago, and in this time, Western Australia has become the world’s leading lupin producer. WA farmers are currently responsible for about 80% of world production, and are the only significant exporters of lupin grain.
